Well, it’s here!  We all gathered around the small television in our owner’s office yesterday morning to see our beautiful belle roof gazebo make its debut on the famed morning talk show Live! with Regis and Kelly.

Without getting too sentimental, we were all buzzing with the opportunity.  I won’t lie and say we weren’t thrilled about the exposure, but it wasn’t just that that had our hearts racing.  We do have a global reach, but at the end of the day we’re still a small business.  We know our customers by name, we are consistently calling meetings to make sure we are giving the best service possible, and are truly passionate about helping both commercial properties and homeowners create outdoor spaces to love and enjoy with their families. We’re a business that, no matter how many people try to convince us we should, will never use an automated service to answer our phones or direct calls.  Every time the phone rings, some one is going to pick it up.  These are all small things, but they’re important to us.  Seeing one of our favorite gazebos on a show we’ve all watched before from our couches was like watching a best friend finally land the starring role in her favorite play after helping her rehearse lines.

It looked gorgeous up on that stage, and as we huddled around the television with travel mugs of coffee and that early Monday morning feeling of ambition…it became clear how we got it there in the first place.  After the first five minutes of the show, we all realized that we should be working on creating happy customers instead of watching television.  So, we turned it off and all scurried back to our desks… ready to make a backyard as breathtaking as the Regis and Kelly Stage.

I wanted to let everyone know the really amazing news!  Regis and Kelly of Live! with Regis and Kelly are heading up to Prince Edward Island on July 12 to film a week of destination episodes.  What will they call home base? One of our Belle Roof Elongated Hexagon Gazebos!

We hope that if you’re not a regular Regis and Kelly viewer, that you’ll catch one of their shows filmed from the gorgeous Prince Edward Island in dynamic Eastern Canada. The gazebo will be the show’s home away from home in Confederation Landing Park within historic Charlottetown, the capital city of Prince Edward Island.

The producers of ‘Live!’ were looking for an outdoor structure that could provide the perfect covered yet open venue for the hosts and their guests. We were selected based on our ability to create the traditional look the historical setting demanded as well as our ability to meet their tight time frame and international shipping needs.  The gazebo will be  assembled on site and measure 10′ x 20′ to accommodate the show’s conversational style staging.  The Live! gazebo will be constructed of the weather resistant and most requested vinyl material with classic cedar shake shingles and cedar flooring.  It’s no surprise that set designers chose the striking Belle Roof gazebo, as its romantic and eye-catching silhouette is a favorite with any institution with people constantly snapping photos.

Want to see what it might look like?  Get excited by checking out how other people have used a similar style.  Regis and Kelly will be putting their own unique touch on their gazebo (just as everyone does!) but here’s a sneak peak of how other people have used their belle roof gazebos!

They’re all so gorgeous; I can’t wait to see the lovely Regis and Kelly sitting in one!

As I believe I’ve mentioned a time or two (hundred!), every year, millions of people turn their yards, porches, decks, patios, and gazebos into outdoor living rooms.  This has been going on for quite some time now; and it doesn’t appear that the trend will ever end.  In fact, it’s reaching new heights, as these exterior spaces are also being made into outdoor kitchens, dining rooms, bedrooms, game rooms, guest rooms, and just about any other type of room you can name.

If you’re trying your hand at this kind of landscaping, and you have a large area to develop, it may be difficult to know where to begin.  That’s no wonder, because it’s like trying to decorate a house that doesn’t have walls or ceilings.  Wait a minute.  Like that?  No.  It is that!  After all, without walls and ceilings, it’s not a house; it’s a yard.  So, there you are.

Still, you can approach the task as if you’re remodeling the inside of your home.  All you need is some structure; or, rather, structures, as in, the garden varieties.  Yes, you can use garden structures, such as trellises, arbors, and pergolas, to define your outdoor rooms, and then work on each section as a single, manageable project.

Start by determining how much space you have, and how many outdoor rooms you want.  Make sure that they will all be large enough to suit the functions that you have in mind for them.  Otherwise, you may have to give up a room, or design one for dual purposes, as you don’t want things getting too crowded.

A dining area should be spacious enough for, at least, a grill, a picnic table (or outdoor dining table), some patio chairs, and a few accent tables.  To add more privacy or shade around a pool, place some trellises in key locations, leaving an adequate expanse of grass open for playing lawn games.  If you want just a quiet little retreat, you may need only a remote corner of your yard.

If you already have a gazebo, pool house, cabana, or sunroom, use it as a focal point, and build around it, tailoring the other areas to specific uses.  You can use anything, from a simple trellis, to a paneled garden screen, depending upon the degree of isolation, and the style, that you desire.  Even if you have limited space, one carefully-chosen piece, such as a gated arbor with a swing, or a double planter bench with a lattice back, can instantly become a miniature haven.

Actually, you can have a lot more fun – and a lot more freedom – designing rooms in your backyard, than you do when working within the confines of your house.  For one thing, having trellises as walls lets you change the size of an area any time you wish.  Moreover, with patio furniture now available in so many styles and colors, there are tons of decorating options as well.

Of course, you’ll also be able to select from thousands of varieties of gorgeous climbing flowers, which will surround you with color, and bring your outdoor rooms to life.  So, I guess that would make them living rooms, in the truest sense.

When you’re having an outdoor wedding in your backyard, there are, of course, many things to worry about, besides the insects that are waiting to crash the affair.  During every step of the planning stage, the comfort of your guests must be your paramount concern.  Then, after each detail is painstakingly worked out, and you think that you’ve got everything covered, go back to the beginning, and make arrangements for the unexpected.

As I’ve said before, even if you’re having a simple cookout, it’s essential that you supply everything that anyone could possibly need, before you sit down at the picnic table.  Well, that’s nothing, compared to the magnitude of preparedness that is required for an outdoor wedding.

Naturally, it’s absolutely necessary to have some sort of shelter.  If you own a gazebo, you already have the ideal setting for the ceremony.  Undoubtedly, it’s picturesque on its own; so it will be utterly spectacular when it’s decorated for the wedding.  However, unless you have a very large gazebo, or a backyard pavilion, you’ll have to rent a tent for the reception; and make sure that it is sturdy enough to endure heavy winds, and that it has thick, weighted sides.

You can also have an indoor room set up for guests, in case the weather really gets nasty.  Decorate an enclosed patio or porch, including your patio chairs, gliders, chaise lounges, accent tables, and planters, with ribbons and/or streamers in the wedding theme colors.

Of course, providing cover is crucial, even if the weather is magnificent, as too much sun can become unbearable (and there’s enough fainting at weddings as it is!).  To begin with, make sure that it won’t be glaring in people’s eyes during the ceremony.  If you’re going to be standing under an arbor or a pergola, position the seats on the side of it that will have the sun at their backs.  It’s also a good idea to use wood outdoor folding chairs, as metal can get very hot.

As for the reception, have patio umbrellas for all of your outdoor dining tables.  Large, free-standing cantilever umbrellas, or commercial market umbrellas, with heavy umbrella stands, are also great for use over food and beverage tables, outdoor bars, and garden benches.

Another way to protect guests from the sun and heat is to have sunscreen available for people who forget to bring their own.  In extremely hot weather, consider renting some large, electric fans for the tents; and if your gazebo is equipped with outdoor ceiling fans, don’t forget to turn them on.  To keep everyone cool from the start, you may even want to print your programs on decorative fans, and have your ushers pass out cold bottles of water to the guests as they arrive.

After all, it’s better to have your ushers pass out water, than to have your guests pass out!

We talk a lot about creating your own at-home oasis.  After all, “stay-cations” have become one of the most popular family destinations as people use backyard structures and outdoor furniture to create beautiful paradises.

But, what about the professionals?  Your backyard haven is just one aspect of the many parts of your home you balance.  But, vacation resorts are completely focused on creating relaxing and rejuvenating environments that will turn people’s everyday stress into invigorating retreats.

Caneel Bay is a luxury resort situated in the pristine natural surrounding of The Virgin Islands National Part on St. John Island.  If anyone knows every detail of get-away design, it’s certainly the island resorts of the Caribbean.  And, the experts turned to our experts for gazebo and cabana design!

First, this open air gazebo serves as a wonderful sheltered outdoor living room.  Using bright teals to add bursts of unexpected color, it reserves an island feel without pushing over into cliché or overwhelming themes.  The outdoor deep seating collection exudes relaxed elegance, as the rich hardwood pulls together the entire outdoor room set that coordinates, but isn’t too “matchy.”

(Click photo to view larger)

This is certainly a design you could emulate in your own home!  For those who do not have a full staff of house keeping, however, you might want to try deep seating that has storage within the arms and back for the cushions.  That way, you can put the cushions away without lugging them into your storage shed, when you’re headed in for the night and rain seems to be on the way.  There are also a lot of stylish deck boxes that could hold your cushions and keep them safe outdoors.  What are your thoughts on it?

And, within sight of this fabulous outdoor living room… is that a cabana?  Why Yes! Can you guess what it’s used for?

Think the ultimate in relaxation…

Yes! A massage space overlooking the ocean proves this resort as one wonderful place!  The hardwood floors, bamboo-style shades, and exposed rafters create a rustic, yet refined feeling of secluded retreat. The palm-leaf style outdoor ceiling fan will keep the sea breeze moving, and fits seamlessly with this tropical décor.  My favorite part is that the rafters are painted white to match the walls, while the exposed ceiling remains its natural wood color.  Such a subtle color choice really brings through the marine feeling of this oasis.

You might be thinking, “What would I do with something like this in my home though?  I can barely get my husband to rub my shoulders!”  Okay, Okay, a massage chair and full spa might be a little over-the-top for your at-home oasis.  But, a cabana with rich hardwood floors, exposed painted rafters, a fabulous outdoor ceiling fan, and bamboo-style blinds can make much more than just an open air spa…  How about a dining area? A meditation retreat? An art or writing studio?  The options are endless. Plus, with walls and a closing door, you can use it for more seasons and in inclement weather!

So, if you hadn’t planned to go toward the islands this summer… that’s no reason to miss out on fabulous outdoor retreats.  Create your own tropical resort this summer, and enjoy it every day: Not for a week, not on one trip, everyday!

After all, if even the top tropical resorts are turning to us…why would you turn to anybody else?

No Weigh!

Certainly, style and color will be key issues when you’re shopping for a picnic table, whether you want it to complement the décor of an enclosed porch or gazebo, match your outdoor furniture, or just look good standing in your yard.  Even so, there are many more factors to consider before you make a decision.

For one thing, figure out what size you need, based not only upon the amount of space that you have for it, but the number of people who will be using it regularly.  If you have a large family, or if you do a lot of entertaining, you’ll need a bigger picnic table, or outdoor dining table.  If you don’t have room for a long, rectangular picnic table, a round, oval, square, octagonal, or hexagonal picnic table may fit in nicely.  An outdoor bistro set, or even a bar table with stools, can work well in a tight spot.  Kids’ picnic tables can also solve many seating problems at large get-togethers.

Extra-wide picnic tables are great for entertaining as well, because they offer more space for food and place settings.  They also keep things within easy reach of everyone, and are conducive to conversation, as people can sit on all four sides, in comfortable benches with backs.  Naturally, these styles usually require roomier areas.

Size also comes into play if you’re going to put your picnic table away for the winter.  If you have limited storage space, you might want to get a picnic table with detached benches, which can be put on or under the table, stacked, or stored separately.  If you don’t have a storage shed, a garage, or any other outdoor structure in which to place it, there are some other ways to keep it in good shape during the months of harsh weather.

First of all, outdoor furniture covers can provide wonderful protection, as long as they are of good quality, and can withstand temperature extremes.  This is especially important for wood picnic tables, which should also be coated with a UV-resistant stain/sealer, if they’re going to be left outside in the winter.  Actually, they should be shielded in the summer as well, because the sun’s powerful rays can hasten the fading of the wood; and that’s why patio umbrellas are as good for picnic tables as they are for people.

The material that you choose can also make a big difference in the way that your picnic table fares over the winter.  For example, polywood picnic tables, which look amazingly like natural wood, are maintenance-free, impervious to the elements, and, in fact, virtually indestructible.  The same is pretty much true of high-quality aluminum picnic tables, which can also endure severe conditions, without breaking, bending, chipping, or rusting.  Another advantage that these types of picnic tables offer is that they are available in tons of colors.

Weight may also be a concern in some cases.  If you’re going to be moving your picnic table around, or putting it on a deck, make sure that you don’t get one that is too heavy.

Yep!  That means that you’ll have to worry about weight before you even sit down to eat!

I’ve given you two ways to throw a party for your mother on Mother’s Day.  But, perhaps you were really hoping to have something to wrap up and give her.  Understandable!  I still believe, though, that the best gifts are gifts with a lot of heart in them.

So, today I’ll be bringing you an awesome outdoor Mother’s Day gift idea: Painting a Mother’s Day Garden Bench!

Find a Pine Garden Bench: The best material for your garden bench will be Pine.  Cedar garden benches don’t take paint very well at all, neither will a Polywood garden bench.  Cypress will work, but a Treated Pine or Select Pine will serve you best.  Other than material, just find a bench that you think your mother would love.  Does she like to spend a lot of time outdoors?  A garden bench with a back might be the most comfortable.  Of course, there are a lot of benches with arm rests and nice deep seats for true outdoor relation.  But, if you think your mom might like something a bit simpler, there are plenty rustic garden benches.  Don’t forget, a lot of styles come with carved hearts or stars accenting the back—what a great way to show what you think of your mother!

Apply an Exterior Primer: The first think you will want to do is to apply an exterior primer.  The primer will ensure that your paint goes on smoothly, and it will help protect your garden bench from damage due to bugs or weather.  Apply the primer with a brush, and follow the grain of the wood.  It’s also important to choose a primer and paint that are compatible.  Most exteriors are either latex or enamel.  Either type of primer and paint will work, but it is imperative that they match!  Using a latex primer and an enamel paint, or vice versa, will cause the paint to adhere poorly.

Creatively Paint Your Garden Bench: After the primer has dried, this is a great time to get the whole family involved.  Try a few different colors, get the old clothes on, and paint the garden bench in the most creative way you can think of!  Maybe write, “I Love You, Mom” across the seat.  Or, have everyone make handprints all over the bench.  The sky is the limit! If she has a favorite poem, use a smaller brush to write it across the back of the bench.  Draw a family portrait of everyone all together.  If you’re truly concerned about your art skills, stencils can be purchased at an arts and crafts store, so you can decorate the bench with stenciled designs! Adding your personal and creative touches will make this one of your mother’s favorite pieces of outdoor furniture.  It doesn’t have to be perfect; it has to be from the heart!

Apply Sealant and Top Coat:  Again, after the paint has dried, you can further protect your bench by applying a clear sealant.  The sealant will keep the paint from chipping and other damage.  Then, if you wish, you can apply a top coat of clear gloss to give the garden bench a shiny quality.  The top coat isn’t necessary, but might be a nice touch if a shinier, glossier bench would fit your garden.

Position it in a Favorite Spot, Tie a Bow, and You’re Done: If you haven’t thought of this road block yet, you may have to find a bit of a creative spot to hide the bench while it’s drying.  Perhaps in your storage shed or other backyard structure.  Is there an untouched corner of the garage?  Perhaps you can take the whole project to an aunt’s, uncle’s, or grandparent’s house—then transport it once the whole bench is finished and ready to go!  However you chose to hide your surprise, you can bring it out once everything is completed and dried.  Position the garden bench in a spot you think she would love.  Or, place it among her other pieces of favorite outdoor furniture.  If you have a gazebo, pergola, or cabana, put it inside and decorate the structure for her big day as well.  Tying a colorful ribbon into a bow around the bench will be a wonderful finishing touch.  On Mother’s Day, simply lead your mother out to her brand new bench and enjoy one of her best Mother’s Days ever!

The best part of Mother’s Day is that you get to give back to the woman that’s always giving!  Creating a spot for her to both relax and be reminded of how much her family loves her is a wonderful Mother’s Day gift!

But, the big day is quickly approaching; so hurry up!

Happy Belated Earth Day!

Well, last Thursday was Earth Day; but I’m just getting around to writing about it.  That’s because I was off last week (way off!), and, like the butcher who backed into his meat grinder, I got a little behind in my work!

I really wanted to acknowledge it, though, because it was the “Big 4-0” for the Blue Marble’s celebration, which was established on April 22, 1970.  Luckily, there’s still plenty of time to say “Happy belated Earth Day!”  After all, even though it’s official on only one day, its purpose is to make us all more aware of the many ways in which we can be kinder to the planet throughout the year(s).

Furthermore, many areas observe Earth Week, during which, they sponsor environmentally-beneficial activities.  For example, a lot of communities organize volunteers to clean and beautify their neighborhoods.  In fact, I was a part of one of these groups in my town last Saturday.  Every year at this time, we meet at the gazebo in the main park, then go around picking up trash and putting it into waste receptacles.

We also sweep sidewalks, clear rubbish from the river banks, paint, and plant flowers and trees.  Because these tasks are spread over several weekends, it’s more like Earth Month.  No matter how you look at it, working for the welfare of this world is always a timely thing; and there are countless measures that we can take to improve its status, many of which are nearly effortless.

For example, take litter (please!).  There’s just no reason for it.  It’s the easiest problem to solve, yet garbage is everywhere – on city streets, along highways, and in wooded areas; and, now, it seems that even public parks are getting messier.  Instead of having a relaxing cookout, you often have to clean up the picnic tables and pavilions after reckless revelers have left their trash lying around, even though the entire area is surrounded by waste receptacles!  In many cases, you’ll also have to clean the grills before you can use them.

Recycling is also simple, yet very important.  It includes not only disposing of garbage properly, but buying things that are made from recycled items; and there are all types of goods in this category.

For instance, polywood outdoor furniture, which is absolutely stunning, is constructed largely from recycled plastics.  Polywood outdoor dining tables, porch swings, patio chairs, porch gliders, and other pieces of porch furniture, look remarkably like real wood, but come in dozens of colors, and are practically indestructible.  You can also find hammocks made from Envirope, which consists of 100% recycled polyester fiber that is derived from discarded pop bottles, yet is as soft as cotton.

The list of eco-friendly merchandise gets more impressive every year.  These days, you can even find all sorts of stylish clothing that’s made from hemp, soybeans, water bottles, tires, paper, cardboard, foam cups, and tons of other stuff.

Just think – there may even come a day when everybody will be running around in their Earth Day suits!

Yours Outdoors,

Kathy

If you think there’s no better gift than giving your mom a day at the ritziest spa in town, think again!  You can recreate the day spa treatment for your mother, and she’ll probably enjoy it even more.  Why? Because her family put the whole thing together!

If you have a gazebo with a hot tub in it, or even a sauna, you’re set.  Let your mom relax in the hot tub for a few hours—try setting up a cd player with some of her favorite music or buying her a book by one of her favorite authors.

But, if you’re not so lucky to have a hot tub gazebo, it’s no problem.  There are plenty of day spa treatments you can try.  Remember to start small; trying to plan way too much may be overwhelming and require so much planning that no one has fun.

First, create the spa space.  If you have a gazebo, pergola, or other backyard structure, decorate it with flowers, streamers, and maybe even balloons.  That way, when you pull her outside, she’ll be wowed by all the decorations!  And, to make sure she knows it’s a trip to the day spa, set out candles, bowls of potpourri, and even hot tea out on your picnic table.  Also set out some of her favorite fresh fruits and juices, or even little breakfast pastries or scones with jam.

A great home spa project can be a pedicure or manicure.  Fill a large bucket with warm water with a tablespoon of baking soda and a teaspoon of bath oil.  Put your mom in the most comfortable patio chair you have; whether that be a chaise lounge or an Adirondack chair, just make sure it’s one of her favorites.  Have her sit with her hands or feet (whichever she prefers, many hardworking moms might not be too keen on everyone touching her feet!) in the warm water for at least 20 minutes.

After that, dry her feet or hands with a nice soft towel and apply a sweet smelling cream based moisturizer or lotion.  This is the tricky part: a lot of salons will clean, clip, and do general nail care.  But, again, some moms won’t exactly be eager to have her family chipping away at the dirt under her nails.  And, after all, this is a day for mom!  So, you might want to scale back a bit and skip right to the polish.

If you know her favorite color (and you should!!), make sure you have a nail polish in that hue!  Do two or three thin coats, allowing the polish to dry between applications.  Try your best to not to get any on the skin around the nails, but keep a damp tissue near by just in case.

Having you spa outside will make splashing water or spilling nail polish a non-issue.  It will also allow the polish to dry faster in the open air!  Remember, don’t concentrate too hard or try to make it perfect.  You’re pampering your mother to say thanks, and part of that is just spending time with her! So, if an 8 year old daughter doesn’t have the perfect polishing techniques yet… it doesn’t matter.  It’s all about getting together and having fun.

So, though your outdoor day spa for mom might not be as refined as the swanky places, she’ll know all the thought and hard work you put into it.  Plus, spending time with her family is always the perfect gift.

In case you forgot, Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 9 this year.  But, don’t worry, we’ll be doing several posts on Mother’s Day activities on the blog to help you prepare for the big day!

A packaged gift is wonderful, but sometimes planning a day of fun can be more enjoyable for the whole family, and mean more to your mom.  Don’t worry though; you don’t have to break the bank to show your mother that you care.

Since spring is upon us, how about planning a big backyard Mother’s Day bash? While she might be expecting breakfast in bed, drag her out from under the covers (after you let her sleep in a bit, of course!) and pull her outside.

Set a picnic table with all of her favorite breakfast foods.  She’ll love the time outside with her family.  Try picking wildflowers or buying flowers from a nursery to decorate her mother’s day picnic table, along with cards, notes, and little fun gifts around her seat.

If you have a pergola or gazebo, decorate it with streamers, balloons, and handmade paper chains.  Dressing up a place that she already loves and making it special will be a wonderful way for the rest of the family to spend time together, and will let her know how much you love your home!

She might be overwhelmed at just this gesture; but your day isn’t over yet!  Make sure that she doesn’t touch ONE dirty dish, and instead let her relax in her porch swing or porch glider while you whisk away all of those used plates and silverware.

And now, you can let the games begin!  Plan a big backyard game in her honor.  Whether it be soccer, touch football, quoits or horseshoes, croquet or bocce ball, just make sure it’s one of her favorites!  Having the whole family play together will be a memory she’ll never forget.

Now… one word to the wise:  As a once rather rambunctious, but always well meaning child… the entire game will not quite have the same effect if you start fighting over the game, the rules, or the score.  Remember, the only winner in this game is MOM.  So, just relax and have fun!

After the games, let Mom have a break.  Work on doing the dishes and other chores around the house and tell her to relax in her hammock.  If you have a chaise lounge, bring a magazine and some lemonade out and let her lay back and spend her special day as nature intended: in full repose!

This is just one of many ideas fit for Mother’s Day.  There are hundreds of ways to let your mother know how much you love her, just make sure you pick the one that’s right for her and your family.

Happy Mother’s Day Preparation!

Hazel.
